BOBBY VEE – from Rubber Ball to Run To Him, Look At Me Girl with Dick Clark

Bobby Vee’s first hit, Suzie Baby, in an update 1962 version. The song, obviously inspired by Buddy Holly , performed in  1959 when Vee  filled in for Buddy Holly the night of the plane crash.

BOBBY VEE – from Rubber Ball to Run To Him

I think I heard something on the radio today I didn’t want to hear.  It was the tail end of a news report.  Tell me I didn’t hear it.   I don’t want to know.

Bobby Vee, one of the many  ’bobby’ singers of the early 60s is more than a teen idol. He was a musician , he wrote some of his songsm though his friend Del Shannon used to tease him because Del struggled to write most of his songs whereas bobby got help from the likes of Carol King (Take Good Care of My Baby’ and others.

I only saw Bobby Vee perform once, maybe twice.  He didn’t do California mcy (where I live). I did see him at least once, on New Year’s eve, performing with Brenda Lee. I believe it was in Reno. Bobby has so much energy and he, like Rick Nelson and other teen idols is into the music first, externals second.

The  story of how Vee took over for Buddy Hoilly at Clear Lake , Iowa

as a 15-year-old with his group, the Shadows, following the terrible plane crash in 1959. Well Vee, was no flash in the pan.  He would go on to have many hits with his own signature sound, though always with a hint of Buddy.  He loved the music and exuded that in concert.

He was /is a family man and loves his sons , who made up his band in the later years, The Vees.

I feel very fortunate to have grown up during Vee’s heyday and got to witness his stardom first hand as it occurred….

BOBBY VEE – from Rubber Ball to Run To Him

‘Stranger in Your Arms‘ from 1963 (stereo) is a beautiful song I’m afraid

to say I never heard before now. One of those gems that never made it

high on the charts. Enjoy

‘Look At Me Girl,’ another non-hit performed in 1966 on Dick Clark’s ‘Where The Action Is’ TV show. Here Dick Clark announce Bobby , on location in his home town of Minneapolis.
Thanks bobby. We’ll be playing your music early and often.

Dick Clark, American Bandstand Remembered in Tribute Videos

Dick Clark, American Bandstand Remembered in Tribute Videos

Dick Clark and American Bandstand were given nice sendoffs on several national programs including American Idol, ‘Pyramid’ game show (created originally by Clark) and Daytime Emmys… Many of us have weighed in with their own video tributes, including thorugh the ‘magic’ of video and Youtube. Here are a couple we found on You Tube that we liked. Credits to M2Productions and Stevie Wonder with some touching background music and luvjrnyfovever for the second. Featured are a lot of the artists that cut their teeth at American Bandstand, such as Chubby Checker, Sam Cooke, Frankie Valli and Barry Manilow, who wrote the theme to American Bandstand, which plays in the background of the second video. Thanks! Dick Clark, American Bandstand Remembered in Tribute Videos

Former ‘Bandstand’ dancers take

to floor of old Philly studio in

Clark tribute

By Kristin E. Holmes

Inquirer Staff Writer

Former American Bandstand dancer Tommy “Crazy Legs” Davis leaned in to examine the enlarged pictures on the walls in Studio B, looking for himself in the photos that captured the Philadelphia heyday of the rock-and-roll dance party hosted by Dick Clark.

Back then, Davis was a thin, 129-pound teenager from Roxborough with curly blond hair.

On Saturday, he was an older version of himself with less hair and a few more pounds but the same love for the TV show and Clark, who died Wednesday in Los Angeles at 82.

“My biggest thrill was dancing with Patti Page,” said Davis, 70, of Jenkintown, who was a regular on the show from 1955 to 1957. “Dick pulled me down from the bleachers.”

Davis was among the hundreds of formerAmerican Bandstand dancers and fans who flooded Studio B at the former WFIL-TV station – the original home of the dance program – to bop, stroll, and twist in Clark’s memory.

The building at 4548 Market St. now houses the Enterprise Center, a nonprofit group that helps minority and disadvantaged entrepreneurs start their own businesses. Studio B is rented out for events such as parties and wedding receptions.

The center opened for public tours Saturday because officials had received so many requests to visit the building since Clark’s death, said Della Clark (no relation), who is president of the center.

From the speakers, the sounds of Chubby Checker, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, and the Beatles provided music with good beats that were easy to dance to.

Arnold Jones, a retired bus driver from North Philadelphia, twirled Grace Short, who works in food service.

Jones, 69, danced on the show twice in the late 1950s. Short, 64, of West Philadelphia, was a regular in 1960 and 1961.

“I saw a few black dancers who I watched [on TV], so I figured the show was for anybody who wanted to come,” Short said.

At the show, she saw James Brown perform in person, and even danced with a white partner.

The first-floor studio is lined with plaques, posters, and other Bandstand memorabilia that the center obtained when Clark auctioned off some of his possessions in 2006.

The building, one of the first to be built as a television station, was the home of American Bandstand until the show moved to Los Angeles in 1964. It later housed WHYY Studios, but fell into disrepair when the public-TV station moved in 1979. MORE

‘American Bandstand’ studios   reopen for tours  in Wake of Dick Clark’s Passing

April 20, 2012, 3:58 p.m. CDT
McClatchy/Tribune – MCT Information Services

PHILADELPHIA _ For seven years it was a hot spot of teenage American pop culture.

From 1957 until 1964, Dick Clark hosted “American Bandstand” at the West Philadelphia studios of WFIL-TV, where thousands of teens dreamed of appearing on the hit show.

But few actually got the chance to dance inside the nondescript building in the shadow of the Market-Frankford El at 46th and Market streets.

If you were one of those teens who yearned for your “Bandstand” moment, here’s your chance.

On Saturday between noon and 3 p.m. the current owners will open the former Studio B for three hours of tours, reminiscing, and perhaps, one last Twist on the dance floor.

“We’ll put on some music and let people have their moment,” said Jeff Wicklund of the Enterprise Center, a nonprofit business incubator which purchased the building in 1995. “We’re just trying to be good stewards of the ‘Bandstand’ legacy.”

Fans of the show have flocked to the building, dropping off flowers and cards since Clark’s death on Wednesday, Wicklund said.

“There have been a lot of people coming through asking to take a few pictures in studio,” he said. “It’s fairly well preserved with photos, mementos and a mural on the wall.”

When the Enterprise Center bought the structure, it had been abandoned for almost 20 years. It’s now on the National Register of Historic Places. Wicklund said the Center has established an endowment to maintain the “Bandstand” studios, which now play host to private parties, high school proms, weddings and fashion shows.

To fund the endowment, the Center is asking for a $20 contribution for admission on Saturday.

“If you can help us out it would be great,” Wicklund said. “But we’re not going to turn anybody away who can’t afford it.”

Dick Clark tributes planned on

‘American Idol,’ Game Show

Network

American Bandstand Studios Reopen ! Bandstand Memorabilia, CollectablesDick Clark’s death Wednesday is prompting near-instantaneous tributes from two television venues where his influence was strongly felt: “American Idol” and the Game Show Network.”Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, Clark’s heir apparent, who co-hosted the “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” specials for the past few years, announced on Twitter on Thursday that the upcoming “Idol” show would contain a tribute to Clark.”We’re putting together a tribute for Dick Clark on @AmericanIdol tonight…just talked to @dizzyfeet ["Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe],” Seacrest wrote.A visibly emotional Seacrest made brief mention of Clark’s passing on Wednesday night’s “Idol” by noting, “Without Dick, a show like this would not exist.”Meanwhile, some of Clark’s greatest nonmusical moments will be replayed over the weekend on Game Show Network, where original remembrances of the man also known as the host of “The $25,000 Pyramid” will be played during reruns of the game show on Friday at 3 a.m., 10 a.m. and during a 10-episode run from 7 p.m. to midnight. Additionally, two more episodes will air Saturday from noon until 1 p.m. (all times Eastern).

Clark began hosting the show, then called “The $10,000 Pyramid,” in 1973 on ABC. The title was changed to “The $20,000 Pyramid” in 1976. It was canceled in 1980 but returned in 1982 on CBS with a higher top prize, “The $25,000 Pyramid.” Clark hosted until 1988.

In the wake of news that Dick Clark, 82, passed away on Wednesday, legions of stars and fans expressed their condolences and shared their fondest memories of the iconic American television personality.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Dick Clark. He has truly been one of the greatest influences in my life,” tweeted Ryan Seacrest, who worked closely with Clark for “New Years Rockin’ Eve.” “My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was also prompt in expressing his gratitude toward Clark for making Times Square the prime destination to ring in the New Year.

“Times Square is considered the crossroads of the world in no small part because Dick Clark’s New Years Eve celebrations there were beamed across the globe,” he said in a statement. “I remember one New Years Eve, he and I stood in Times Square marveling about how much the area – and the City – had improved over the years. But Dick Clark never had to change – he was a great entertainer who stood the test of time. Generations of Americans grew up with Dick, and yet he seemed forever young. His spirit will always live on in Times Square, and in hearts of millions of New Yorkers.”

Debbie Gibson, a former guest on “American Bandstand,” referred to Clark as a “gentleman,” and tweeted that things “won’t be the same without him.” Fellow bandstand alum Sheila E offered “prayers to (her) friend Dick Clark.”

“Dick Clark to sensor Sheila E’s wardrobe for American Bandstand. He told the network to let me do my thing… I loved him from that day!” she added.

Marie Osmond went on to tweet that “In 1974, my first time on BandStand, I thought Dick Clark was the most handsome man in show business,” and Joan Rivers tweeted: “Very sad to hear about Dick Clark. What a great life. What a great career. Relevant until the end. He will be missed!”

Janet Jackson also took to twitter to convey her thoughts and prayers.

“Dick Clark changed the face of musical television,” she wrote. “He was wonderful to many artists including our family. We will miss him. God bless.”

Roseanne Barr tweeted a “RIP,” adding “he was always nice to me,” famed baseball player and manager Tommy Lasorda noted that he was “always a gentleman” on the occasions they met, Blake Shelton tweeted: “so proud I had the chance to shake hands with Dick Clark in my lifetime… Great man,” while Scott Baio tweeted that he “had the pleasure of meeting him. What a huge loss.”

And according to Larry King, Clark was a man of many talents.

“Dick Clark was a great friend, true legend, & a master journalist. Nobody did what he did better,” he tweeted. “It was a pleasure to be in his company.”

A slew of stars also credited Clark for inspiring themtrans American Bandstand Studios Reopen ! Bandstand Memorabilia, Collectablesto pursue careers in entertainment and praised him for his vast contributions to show business.

Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy, stated that “Dick Clark was an entertainment icon, bringing music into the homes of millions of Americans over his nearly 60-year career.”

“Our deepest heartfelt sympathies go out to his family, friends, fans, and all who have enjoyed his great contributions to music and entertainment,” Portnow continued. “He will be terribly missed, and his legacy will live on forever.”

Others remembered Clark for more than just his youthful love of music and fanfare.

“You may remember Dick Clark as the world’s oldest living teenager,” wrote Danny Bonaduce. “I’ll remember him as the man who beat me in a pushup contest – he was 74.”

Dick Clark, New Years Eve, American Bandstand and even Ryan Seacrest all became top trending topics on Twitter as news of his death circulated, with hundreds of thousands of fans joining celebrities in sharing their favorite Clark-related moments. But for some, the most fitting way to pay tribute was by retweeting one of his most memorable quotes.

“If you want to stay young-looking, pick your parents very carefully,” thousands tweeted on Wednesday.

Chubby Checker Remembers Dick Clark

“We danced to the music that Dick Clark played,” says Chubby Checker. ”The king of the disc jockeys has died and, because of him, we will never be the same.”

In 2008, Billboard named Checker’s iconic smash “The Twist” the No. 1 song of the Billboard Hot 100′s first 50 years. The song remains the only title to have logged two separate runs to No. 1, reigning the week of Sept. 24, 1960, and again the weeks of Jan. 13 and 20, 1962, after the song – and its revolutionary dance – experienced a second wave of pop culture fanfare.

Checker might never have recorded the song, however, had it not been for Clark. The original version by the song’s writer, Hank Ballard, won praise on “American Bandstand,” but when Ballard was unavailable to perform it on the show, Clark suggested that Checker cover it to expose it further to “Bandstand” viewers.

How did Checker get such a career-making nod? “I had worked with Clark on a recording session of ‘Jingle Bells,’ singing the song through impressions of other acts of the time,” Checker recalls.

Clark is, in fact, even not-so-indirectly responsible for Checker’s famed recording name. “Clark’s wife was in the studio when I was recording that holiday project,” Checker remembers. “I’d  had the nickname Chubby since I was 11 years old, and I was doing a Fats Domino impression. Mrs. Clark said, ‘His name is Chubby, like Fats?’ Well, then, his last name should be Checker, like Domino’.”

Checker says that the reach of “Bandstand” and the dance that “The Twist” inspired combined to change music forever. “Before ‘The Twist,’ you danced in rhythm with the song. With ‘The Twist,’ suddenly you’re dancing apart from the beat, and not with your girl. Now, you see a girl across the floor that you’ve never seen before, you’re nodding your head, you’re seeing her dance … By the time the song is over … whew,” Checker says, chuckling at the song’s impact on not only the development of early rock & roll and dance, but perhaps also on relations between the sexes ever since.

“‘Bandstand was around before ‘The Twist,” Checker says, “but, it was Clark’s suggestion for me to record the song that caused an explosion for both the show and my career.”

“Just think,” marvels Checker, “the No. 1 song of all-time … all because of Dick Clark and ‘American Bandstand’.”

New Years and DICK CLARK – STILL GOING STRONG at 80

REMEMBERING  DICK CLARK…

Other than New Years, We don’t

hear much about Dick Clark

BUT the man once known as ‘America’s oldest living teenager’ who almost single- handedly carried rock and roll through the ages is very much alive and still putting in his typical long days at work. But other than his brief annual appearances on his New Years Eve ABC program, we seldom see Dick Clark in the news since he suffered a stroke in 2004. Though, today, many of his programs are still running, from ‘Rock, Roll Remember’ in radio syndication, to his award and game shows. Recently , the Emmys paid a well deserved tribute to Clark . Ryan Seacrest – who is said to be Clark’s eventual successor – MC’d the program; you can see Clark and his wife in the audience for a brief moment. For Clark’s daily blogs and recent activities go to DickClarkOnline.com New Years and DICK CLARK STILL GOING STRONG at 80 Here, many of Clark’s proteges pay tribute, from Donnie Osmond to Barry Manilow, who wrote the lyrics to Clark’s American Bandstand theme. Clark , himself, makes an appearance;. Clark has come a long way since the diabetic stroke, which left him with impaired speech – but nothing will probably ever stop ‘America’s oldest teenager’ until his final breaths, which are, hopefully, many years away. Most or all of the syndicated Rock Roll and Remember is comprised of early interviews with the many stars Clark worked with – and there’s a llot of this in the vaults. Recent features include a clip on John Lennon, whose recent’30 year passing’ was honored and some clips and interviews with Neil Diamond, who talks about those early days working at the Brill Building. Clark has brought in veteran DJ GaryBryan to help out – check out the REWIND blog, where Bryan talks about then and now with the stars….

DICK CLARK PERSONIFIES ROCK AND ROLL PROBABLY MORE THAN ANYONE

By the way, REWIND is also the name of what we believe is the finest interview program today featuring ‘ the stars you grew up with,’ t syndicated and online from Jimmy Jay http://rewindshow.com For us, Jay is doing today what Clark has been doing for years… schmoozing with the rock and roll artists we grew up . Jay offers full length, hour long entertaining interviews now online and in syndication. …

BANDSTAND LIVES IN PHILLY

DICK CLARK MEETS JIMMY JAY

http://rewindshow.com Jay done interviews with virtually everyone from the era – even a touching tribute to Gene Pitney, done weeks after Pitney’s passing and what would have been scheduled live interview with Gene. HEAR great programs from Branson and Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theatre featuring artists like Bill Medley and Paul Revere. Jay has done over 100 shows , with some artists more than once. Here are just some of the stars Jay has interviewed and/or featured in programs: Gordon Waller (perhaps last interview with him), Bobby Vinton, Chubby Checker, Brian Hyland, Gary Puckett, BJ Thomas, Tony Orlando, The Turtles, Bobby Goldsboro, Connie Francis, The Skyliners, Maurice Williams, Kenny Vance, Kathy Young, Duprees, Marvelettes, Petula Clark, DeeDee Sharp, Stevie Wonder,Sam Moore, The Crests (Johnny Maestro?) Jay uses the program also to raise money for good causes including stars down on their luck and the MDA. He’s currently offering a spectacular tribute to Tony Orlando featuring a nultitude of stars…. all available at his website. There are also a few podcasts offered at Rewind.com including an interview with Peter of Peter and Gordon, perhaps the last interview Peter ever did, which became part of a touch tribute that Jimmy Jay has put together. Jay even interviewed the man, Dick Clark, himself, in 2008. Here’s what Clark and others had to say about Jimmy Jay and his Rewind Show… Dick Clark 4-3-2008: “Jimmy Thank you so much for having me on your show!” Tony Orlando (64th Birthday Party 2008): “Jimmy You are a master at making sure everything goes well, you are a talented and incredible host, you did a job there and I’ve never seen anybody quite steer a show like that! Again Mr Jay you are the man! God Bless You and your Family believe me when I tell you I will never forget that night.” Andy Kim (Rock Me Gently): “I am honored to finally do this with you cause you’ve been carrying all of us on your shoulders playing the greatest songs of all time from this wonderful era that we happened to have grown up in it’s just an honor to be on your show!” Jerry Lewis: “Jimmy thank you for all you do for MDA, and it’s a real nice thing you are doing for Tony Orlando. I Love You Back Jim.” Bobby Vee: “Great Show, and I Love your web site! I have it bookmarked in my favorite places, Keep Rockin’…” MORE DICK CLARK, BEATLES AND GREAT OLDIES BOWLING SHIRTS 300x38 New Years and DICK CLARK STILL GOING STRONG at 80 From Wikipedia: Richard Wagstaff[1] “Dick” Clark (born November 30, 1929) is an American businessman;[2] game-show host; and radio and television personality. He served as chairman and chief executive officer of Dick Clark Productions, which he has sold part of in recent years. Clark is best known for hosting long-running television shows such as American Bandstand,[2] five versions of the game show Pyramid, and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Clark has long been known for his departing catchphrase, “For now, Dick Clark…so long,” delivered with a military salute, and for his youthful appearance, earning the moniker “America’s Oldest Teenager”, until he had a stroke in late 2004. With some speech ability still impaired, Clark returned to his New Year’s Rockin’ Eve show on December 31, 2005/January 1, 2006. Subsequently, he appeared at the Emmy Awards on August 27, 2006, and every New Year’s Rockin’ Eve show since then. On November 30, 2009, disc jockeys throughout the U.S. paid tribute to Clark on his 80th birthday. Early life, education and early career Clark was born and raised in Mount Vernon, New York, the son of Julia Fuller (née Barnard) Clark and Richard Augustus Clark. His only sibling, older brother Bradley, was killed in World War II. His career in show business began in 1945 when he started working in the mailroom of WRUN, a radio station owned by his uncle and managed by his father in Utica, New York. Clark was soon promoted to weatherman and news announcer. Clark attended A.B. Davis High School (now A.B. Davis Middle School) in Mount Vernon and Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity (Phi Gamma); he graduated in 1951 with a degree in business. Clark began his television career at station WKTV in Utica and was also subsequently a disc jockey on radio station WOLF in Syracuse. His first television-hosting job was on Cactus Dick and the Santa Fe Riders, a country-music program. He would later replace Robert Earle (who would later host the GE College Bowl) as a newscaster.[4] Main article: American Bandstand In 1952 Clark moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, more specifically to Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania,[5] and resided within the Drexelbrook Community where he was neighbors with Ed McMahon. There he took a job as a disc jockey at radio station WFIL. WFIL had an affiliated television station (now WPVI) with the same call sign which began broadcasting a show called Bob Horn’s Bandstand in 1952. Clark was a regular substitute host on the show and when Horn left, Clark became the full-time host on July 9, 1956. The show was picked up by the ABC television network, renamed American Bandstand, and was first aired nationally on August 5, 1957. On that day, Clark interviewed Elvis Presley. New Years and DICK CLARK STILL GOING STRONG at 80 Clark also began investing in the music publishing and recording business in the 1950s. In 1959, the United States Senate opened investigations into “payola”, the practice of music-producing companies paying broadcasting companies to favor their product. Clark was a shareholder in the Jamie-Guyden Distributing Corporation, which nationally distributed Jamie and other non-owned labels. Clark sold his shares back to the corporation when ABC suggested that his participation might be considered as creating a conflict of interest. In 1960, when charges were levied against Clark by the Congressional Payola Investigations, he quietly divested himself of interests and signed an affidavit denying involvement.[7] Clark was not charged with any illegal activities. Unaffected by the investigation, American Bandstand was a major success, running daily Monday through Friday until 1963, then weekly on Saturdays until 1987. In 1964, the show moved from Philadelphia to Hollywood, California. A spin-off of the program, Where the Action Is, aired from 1965 to 1967, also on ABC. Charlie O’Donnell, a close friend of Clark’s and an up-and-coming fellow Philadelphia disc jockey, was chosen to be the announcer, which he served for ten years. O’Donnell was one of the announcers on the 1980s versions of Clark’s Pyramid game show; he continued to work with Clark on various specials and award shows until his death in November 2010. Clark produced American Bandstand for syndicated television and later the USA Network, a cable-and-satellite-television channel, until 1989. Clark also hosted the program in 1987 and 1988; David Hirsch hosted in 1989, its final year. American Bandstand and Dick Clark himself were honored at the 2010 Daytime Emmy Awards.[8] [edit] Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Main article: Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest In 1972, Clark produced and hosted Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, the first of an ongoing series of specials still broadcast on New Year’s Eve. Segments of the first broadcast can be seen in the motion picture Forrest Gump. The program has typically consisted of live remotes of Clark in Times Square in New York City, New York, counting down until the New Year ball comes down. After the ball drops, the focus of the program switches to musical segments taped prior to the show in Hollywood, California. The special is live in the Eastern Time Zone, and it is delayed for the other time zones so that they can ring in the New Year with Clark when midnight strikes in their area. ABC broadcast the event on every New Year’s Eve since 1972 except in 1999 due to the airing of ABC 2000 Today, news coverage of the milestone year hosted by Peter Jennings. In the more than three decades it has been on the air, the show has become a mainstay in U.S. New Year’s Eve celebrations. Before then, Guy Lombardo (a.k.a. “Mr. New Year’s Eve”), along with his big band orchestra, the Royal Canadians, had long been the main draw for New Year’s Eve broadcasts for radio and, later, for television (on CBS). Watching the ball in Times Square drop on Clark’s show is considered an annual cultural tradition for the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day holiday. Twice, Clark was not able to host his show. The first time happened at the end of 1999, going into 2000, due to ABC 2000 Today’. However, during that broadcast Clark, along with ABC News correspondent Jack Ford, announced his signature countdown to the new year. He was a correspondent, according to the transcript of the broadcast released by ABC News. Ford had been assigned to Times Square during the broadcast and thus Clark’s role was limited. Nevertheless, he won a Peabody Award for his coverage. The second time happened at the end of 2004, as he was recovering from his stroke; Regis Philbin substituted as host. The following year Clark returned to the show although Ryan Seacrest served as primary host. From December 31, 2005, Clark co-hosted New Year’s Rockin Eve with Seacrest. [edit] Pyramid game shows Main article: Pyramid (game show) Before Pyramid, Clark had two brief runs as a quiz-show host, presiding over The Object Is and then Missing Links. In a near twist of irony, on Missing Links, he replaced his former Philadelphia neighbor and subsequent TV’s Bloopers & Practical Jokes co-host, Ed McMahon, when the game show switched networks from NBC to ABC; NBC replaced Missing Links with Jeopardy!.
