JERRY LEE LEWIS MUSIC – 2 Unique Styles, Then and Now
A Couple of classics from The Killer, showcasing his immense talent. Lewis was strictly rockabilly rock and roll in this late 50s classic when Lewis was in his  unadorned splendor-  natural wild-eyed best, rocking ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’  with his great Sun trio and Jerry Lee during his later country stardom in the late 60s-70s with ‘Who’s Gonna Play This Old Piano,’accompanied by cousin Mickey Gilley and Charlie Rich. Truly, nobody will be able to play the old piano like Jerry Lee when he’s gone. We’re lucky he’s still (amazingly) here, after all he’s been through. We’ve seen him a few dozen times in concert, some better than others, but never disappointing just being able to see this personality-packed legend.

Lewis reinvented himself, as the cliche goes, after a short and tumultuous early rock and roll career. He had only two big hits, Great Balls of Fire with Whole Lotta but among the biggest classics (John Lennon called ‘Great Balls’ the greatest R and R song)… but that was enough to establish Lewis as one of the Top 5 original rock and rollers along with Chuck Berry, Elvis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, not to mention a few other close 2nd teer guys like Fats Domino and Ray Charles, who weren’t quite pure rock and roll but close and great… Bo Diddly is somewhat over-rated in our opinion..
So, Lewis was blackballed from marrying is 13-year old second cousin Myrna in 1958-59 and rock and roll wasn’t the same, but he cam back in the mid-60s as a country crooner with ‘Who Made Milwaukee Famous’ and others and he had himself a double career. Today if you catch him in concert you get the two sides of Jerry Lee.

Time goes by and we don’t want to forget this great talent, still ‘hangin’ in like Gunga Din,’ as he would say, amongg his other colorful quotes. He’s put out a couple classic albums in recent years and .
On last Satirday’s Record Store Day, Jerry Lee Lewis played Jack White’s Third Man Records where The show is being recorded for a live album, and the backing band includes Steve Cropper and Jim Keltner, along with Jack Lawrence from the Dead Weather and Raconteurs on the bass guitar. ‘ I can’t tell you how excited I am, as Jerry Lee is one of my all-time musical heroes. Here’s a song from my favorite live record, recorded at the Star Club in Hamburg in 1964, and featuring the Nashville Teens laying it down behind him.’ – Jared Shade Reynolds

CHUCK BERRY

Earlier today Chuck Berry’s representatives issued a terse statement on Chuck’s condition:

Due to exhaustion, Mr. Berry was unable to complete his scheduled performance in Chicago at the Congress Theatre January 1, 2011. However, he is fine and has returned to his home near St. Louis.

That’s the entire statement! Chuck had played B.B King’s Club in New York the night before, but from the git go had trouble with his band in Chicago the next night. Chuck’s next gig is scheduled for the 19th of this month at a club in his hometown of St. Louis where he regularly performs. As of now, that date is still on.

All we can do is hope it was just exhaustion and send our prayers and good thoughts his way.

Chuck Berry returns home after

We hate to see it take a health issue to bring perhaps the leading living legend of Rock & Roll back to the public eye, but 84-year-young Chuck Berry started off the year with a bang. Reports have him slumping over his piano, reportedly due to exhaustion, then having to cancel the concert and return home January 1.

ST. LOUIS — Chuck Berry, who fell ill with exhaustion and was escorted from stage during a Chicago concert this weekend, has returned home to suburban St. Louis, a close friend of the rock-and-roll legend said Monday.

The 84-year-old performer did not require hospitalization and Berry’s friend, Joe Edwards, said he appeared to have fully recovered.

“I think it was just exhaustion,” Edwards said, noting that Berry played two shows in New York on New Year’s Eve, then flew to Chicago where he played at the Congress Theater on Saturday night.

“I think by the time the concert in Chicago got near the end he just got tired,” he said.

Berry’s agent, Dick Alen, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the singer “feels tired but good.”

Edwards said Berry returned to his home in Wentzville, Mo., on Sunday afternoon, and that he is feeling well enough to prepare for a Jan. 19 concert at Blueberry Hill in University City, Mo. Berry has performed monthly concerts at the popular bar and restaurant that Edwards owns since 1996.

One Stop Music and Shopping

Here is the front page of a music magazine published almost 20 year  ago, deriding the Rock Hall of Fame for overlooking key talents (clockwise, from top right GENE PITNEY, NEIL SEDAKA, DEL SHANNON, CONNIE FRANCIS, THE SHIRELLES and BRENDA LEE.  Since that time,  Pitney , Shannon, the Shirelles and Brenda Lee have finally been inducted, but , amazingly, Neil Sedaka – who had two separate careers, in the 60s and 70s – and Connie Francis , who is the second if not best -selling female singer of all time- are still left out of the Hall, along with many notable names like Neil Diamond,  Chubby Checker Paul Anka, Jan and Dean, Nary Wells, The Ventures, Lesllie Gore and most of the attached list (at left) and others you could probably think of…  It’s always been an issue as to ‘What is rock and roll? ‘, but if they’re  now letting in rap artists and heavy metal,blues and country artists its high time they considered the pop-meisters. Afterall,  pop was the rock and roll in the 50s and 60s as was much of country music.  Many no longer take the Hall seriously once learning that it is run by the head of ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine, a publication that has never really recognized any music prior to 1968, it’s inception, with rare exception.  Early RS publications , for example , idsmissed Roy Oribson as a lightweight who hid behind dark clothes and glasses – that is, until Orbison returned to fame in the 80s, playing with some of Rolling Stone’s faves like Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan.  Unlike some of the sports hall of fames, which put some actual ‘science’ to the test in selected members, the Hall is largely a popularity contest of music writers and publishers, largely of younger age.   Prior to being inducted into the hall, the late great Gene Pitney once suggested they not keep nominating him every year but give his slot to a younger artist more likely to get in.  Same for Del Shannon, who some say was very depressed after being overlooked many times.  Since then, the Hall has become a joke, except to those who may have been inducted or prefer newer music to older.

Dick Clark single handedly kept rock and roll alive throught the fifties into the sixties when many thought it was a flash in the pan
