The VENTURES -‘Snowflakes’ ala Greensleeves upbeat instrumental

CHARLES BROWN’s ‘Please Come Home for Christmas’ has to be in the top 10 of all Christmas songs

Not sure if Gene had any Christmas hits but there’s nothing more Christmas than this beautiful rare version of the Lord’s Prayer

A rarity from Gene Pitney, appropriate for Christmas

SOLOMON BURKE – Presents for Christmas

For a change of pace let’s look back at this wonderful interview from probably the late 70s with GENE PITNEY done by the equally wonderful Canadian DJ RED ROBINSON…DEFINITELY FITTING FOR CHRISTMAS… in which a very honest Pitney speaks frankly how music and the times changed from the 60s to the 70s-and not for the better
phil spector albumChristmas is timeless. While music changes along with everything else the rest of the year we come back to the tried and true standards that brung us here. How can you beat the likes of Rockin Around the Chrsitmas Tree, White Christmas (Bing, Drifters and others), Phil Spector’s classics – Phil celebrates a birthday this week!, Pretty Paper,Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, O Holy Night and so many more. Roch, Country, Pop and R and B all come together like families this one time of year… Enjoy your/our favoirtes!

IF THE PHIL SPECTOR CHRISTMAS ALBUM isn’t the best all time Christmas LP we’d like to know a better one. Here’s side 1 to start things off..

JACKIE WILSON was sometimes called the Black Elvis, with not dissimilar looks and near operatic vocal style on ballads

FOUR SEASONS, like many had thier own Christmas album with some great songs like this one , that became a hit

DION (no not Celine please) doing his great version of the Phil spector classic sung orignally by Darlene Love and Crystals. Dion has a great Christmas album out around 2009.

ELVIS’ Christmas classic ‘Blue Christmas

THE KILLER, JERRY LEE LEWIS Doing his version of Blue Christmas, originally recorded by Jim Reeves; Elvis was not the first

FATS DOMINO had his own Chirstmas album a few years back when Dion did and it was also a real sleeper that didn’t get the airplaly. How’s HIS version of ‘Blue Christmas’ here…

CHARLES BROWN, Mr. Merry Christmas Baby, with his original of “Please Come Home for Christmas’ circa 1961

Remembering JEAN SHEPHERD and his Christmas (Eve) Story

Remembering JEAN SHEPHERD and his

Christmas (Eve) Story

Great writeup by cofounder of Steely Dan about a pioneer of talk radio, when radio was still real fun and the ‘friend’ you’d take under your covers via transistor and go to sleep with. Didn’t know until now that Jean Shepherd  has since become, perhaps, more known for his connection to The Christmas Story movie than the wildly popular ‘hip’ early talk show on NEW YORK’ s powerhouse, WOR.    We grew up 3,000 miles away from where Shepherd reigned and never heard the man until recently, though we had many of our own out West  ( Bob Sherwood,  Al  Jazzbeaux Collins, Russ the Moose Ssyracuse, Bobby Dale, even Ira Blue, but perhaps no one person who could put it all together in one ascerbic session like Jean Shepherd. Here’s Fagen, who can talk much more intelligently about Shepherd than we can

On Christmas Eve, TBS will again present its annual 24-hour marathon of Bob Clark’s modern classic, A Christmas Story. Wrapping presents while watching Ralphie pine for a Red Riding BB gun has become a holiday tradition as beloved and durable as candy canes and eggnog. Yet the author and narrator of A Christmas Story, Jean Shepherd, had a deeper legacy of enchanting, subtly barbed storytelling as a longtime voice on nightly radio. In this piece from December 2008, Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagenrecounts growing up in suburban New Jersey enthralled by Shepherd’s radio show.

Remembering JEAN SHEPHERD and his Christmas (Eve) Story

Jean Shepherd.

Jean Shepherd

If you know Jean Shepherd’s name, it’s probably in connection with the now-classic film A Christmas Story, which is based on a couple of stories in his book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. He also does the compelling voice-over narration. On Christmas, TBS will continue its tradition of presenting a 24-hour Christmas Storymarathon. There are annual fan conventions devoted to the film released 25 years ago this Thanksgiving and the original location in Cleveland has been turned into a museum. But long before A Christmas Story was made, Shepherd did a nightly radio broadcast on WOR out of Manhattan that enthralled a generation of alienated young people within range of the station’s powerful transmitter. Including me: I was a spy for Jean Shepherd.
In the late ’50s, while Lenny Bruce was beginning his climb to holy infamy in jazz clubs on the West Coast, Shepherd’s all-night monologues on WOR had already gained him an intensely loyal cult of  MORE

Charles Brown, Jackie Wilson, Jack Benny Close Out Christmas, Coupons

There was, or, is only one CHARLES BROWN, great blues singer/piano player with Johnny Moore’s group in the 40s and 50s, who disappeared for years only to emerge from obscurity, thanks largely to Danny Caron. I was lucky to live in the San Francisco area during that time of Brown’s reemergence and witnessed not only a great artist but a wonderful person who shared his colorful history and thoughts during his concert lovefests, circa 1990s. Christmas hasn’t been the same since Brown passed a few years back . …. Then we have the great JACKIE WILSON, Mr. ‘R&B Opera’ singer, who turned pop music into some incredible vocal gymnastics as we here in ‘O Holy night.’ Nice to be able to go back and bring back these greats from time to time.. Merry Crhistmas, Baby, as Chares would say.
