CHRISTMAS OLDIES ARE TIMELESS JESSE BELVIN I Want You Christmas

The VENTURES -‘Snowflakes’ ala Greensleeves upbeat instrumental

CHARLES BROWN’s ‘Please Come Home for Christmas’ has to be in the top 10 of all Christmas songs

Not sure if Gene had any Christmas hits but there’s nothing more Christmas than this beautiful rare version of the Lord’s Prayer

A rarity from Gene Pitney, appropriate for Christmas

SOLOMON BURKE – Presents for Christmas

For a change of pace let’s look back at this wonderful interview from probably the late 70s with GENE PITNEY done by the equally wonderful Canadian DJ RED ROBINSON…DEFINITELY FITTING FOR CHRISTMAS… in which a very honest Pitney speaks frankly how music and the times changed from the 60s to the 70s-and not for the better
phil spector albumChristmas is timeless. While music changes along with everything else the rest of the year we come back to the tried and true standards that brung us here. How can you beat the likes of Rockin Around the Chrsitmas Tree, White Christmas (Bing, Drifters and others), Phil Spector’s classics – Phil celebrates a birthday this week!, Pretty Paper,Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, O Holy Night and so many more. Roch, Country, Pop and R and B all come together like families this one time of year… Enjoy your/our favoirtes!

IF THE PHIL SPECTOR CHRISTMAS ALBUM isn’t the best all time Christmas LP we’d like to know a better one. Here’s side 1 to start things off..

JACKIE WILSON was sometimes called the Black Elvis, with not dissimilar looks and near operatic vocal style on ballads

FOUR SEASONS, like many had thier own Christmas album with some great songs like this one , that became a hit

DION (no not Celine please) doing his great version of the Phil spector classic sung orignally by Darlene Love and Crystals. Dion has a great Christmas album out around 2009.

ELVIS’ Christmas classic ‘Blue Christmas

THE KILLER, JERRY LEE LEWIS Doing his version of Blue Christmas, originally recorded by Jim Reeves; Elvis was not the first

FATS DOMINO had his own Chirstmas album a few years back when Dion did and it was also a real sleeper that didn’t get the airplaly. How’s HIS version of ‘Blue Christmas’ here…

CHARLES BROWN, Mr. Merry Christmas Baby, with his original of “Please Come Home for Christmas’ circa 1961

While all his ‘partners in crime’ from the Sun Records Days are long gone, JERRY LEE LEWIS just

keeps going. Even in failing health, when Lewis gets in front of the piano it’s like time stands still and it’s

1955 all over again.  Who would have thunk the hardest living one of the group of Elvis, Carl Perkins, Roy

Orbison and Johnny Cash would be the one stil rockin? And the new album has received a 5 star rating from

Amazon, now available HERE on sale for only $10!

Lewis will make his 80th Anniversary tour in 2015 . Knowing him  it won’t be his last

The man does not know he is pushing 80 (79 to be exact). Was on Letterman last night for the whole show doing songs from this album and others — wish I could see the parts during the ads. Meanwhile on this album — this is more Rock & Roll than Country (the flip of Mean Old Man) — having said that it has some of each as usual. Well produced, great sound. I wish he could go on recording forever. The piano is well mixed and audible for most of the songs although two of them he takes up the guitar (like Sunday Morning Coming Down and Mean Old Man) — which he has done in the past, they just never really advertised it. Folsum Prison Blues is very nice as is the title song. The sound has some of the old Sun echo effect, but is thoroughly modern in quality. Recorded and Memphis Blues Club. If you are a fan you have to have it, if you are not yet a fan get Last Man Standing (CD) and Last Man Standing (DVD) first — if you like those get Mean Old Man and Rock & Roll Time second. You won’t regret it. This is a man who has had a gold something every decade for seven decades … must be doing something right. One thing he does that other “old” stars don’t do is that he does new material a lot. Of course in concert and even albums he is forced to re-visit his hits (once on Austin City Limits he said if he did not do Whole Lotta Shakin and Great Balls of Fire he probably would not get paid) — but the vast majority is new stuff which is why he remains relevant while other “old” starts are just parodies of themselves 50 or 30 or whatever years ago. Jerry Lee Lewis is still performing differently and with new songs. One of the songs dates to 1860s — this guy is a museum of old American music.
Jerry Lee Lewis does not show his age at all on this new release! Lewis, the producer and arranger did a great job of picking songs that fit his vocal range and style. There is still the presence of his strong, rollicking piano playing on each song. There is also a nod to his Sun Studio partners Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley with “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Promise Land”. I will not be surprised to see Rock & Roll Time on some best of the year list at the end of 2014.

NEW BIOGRAPHY FROM JERRY LEE  LEWIS

HIS OWN STORY

Review
“No writer is better suited than Rick Bragg to tell Lewis’s story. The result is a biography with the memorable language and narrative drive we expect only from the finest novels . . . the best book on rock and roll I have ever read.” (Ron Rash, author of Serena)

“An iconic rocker receives a warm, admiring biography from a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author . . . Throughout, Bragg displays his characteristic frisky prose . . . From a skilled storyteller comes this entertaining, sympathetic story of a life flaring with fire, shuddering with shakin’.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“Mesmerizing . . . IRick Bragg illuminates Jerry Lee Lewis’s controversial-but brilliant-life and career in this captivating biography.” (Parade)

Flash Cadillac ReEmerges, Jerry Lee at Clear Lake #51

JERRY LEE LEWIS will be the big name, by far, at the  51st Annual Surf Ball Room ‘winter Dance Party,’  but there’s a ‘sleeper’ performing that has quite a story to tell. It’s Flash Cadillac, formerly flash Cadillac and the Continental Kis.

Next to Sha Na Na , Flash Cadillac is probably the most famous rock and roll ‘cover’ band. There are other good ones who’ve been around a long time, like California’s PapaDooRunRun

As  with original groups with hit records, Flash Cadillac has seen the ravages of time decimate the group. Only bass player, Warren   Knight has been with the group since its inception in 1969,  an original member and current leader of the group. We caught the elusive group New Years eve in the Northern California burg of Livermore.  As we were told after the concert, original   and probably the most colorfull member of the group, ‘Spke’ had passed away on stage in 1993.

I had seen the group in its emryonic stages, when oldies cover bands were just getting going in the late 60s and early 70s and was lucky enough to catch Flash Cadillac when I was a student at UCLA in the early 70s. I remember there only being about 10 people in the audience,
which was the floor of a gymnasium at USC, Los Angeles. I don’t remember the show itself, but Warren did recall the group jumped in the pool after the show.
Mr. Flash Cadillac Vintage Print
So, a big fan of FlashCadillac, after their appearances on Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack, other movie and TV appearances and then the live performance. I had always been impressed with
the colorful characters. Besides Spike, who played the big tough guy,
there was the Jerry Lee =like piano player and others. I believe there was a real Flash Cadillac, the short, heavy set guy no longer with the group. Sorry, more information not available. Flash Cadillac also made it onto the American Graffiti soundtrack , even though they didn’t appear in the movie.

41 Original Hits From The Soundtrack Of American Graffiti

They claim themselves ‘the best band without a big hit record’ around. And its hard to disagree. Apparently, according to the tribute video that follows, ,  original lead , Sam McFadden – called the ‘best lead rock and roll singer’ by noted rock cridtic Robert Hilburn – also passed along with ‘Kris.’ Check out these videos and CDs for living proof proof of some real music.  By the way, Flash did have three Top 100 ‘ hits of their own, including ‘Boogie In the Back Row of the Movie Show,’ as heard in this video…

Jerry Lee Lewis has now outlived his Sun compatriots Elvis, Perkins and Orbison by many years. We’re lucky to have him , even if he may have slowed a bit (but who hasn’t at 75 years?  There’s only one Killer. Enjoy him while you can, like at the upcoming Surf Ballroom Winter Dance Party Feb 5 in Clear Lake, Iowa along with Flash. See below.  Here Jerry performs from his recent critically acclaimed  LP, Last Man Standing, songs with Tom Jones and the late , great Solomon Burke (Who Will the Last Fool Be.)
