What a fantastic show. Herb Alpert may have long been forgotten by most people but a Full House of some 500 loyalists showed up on thurs night at Leshser theater in Walnut Creek to give him several standing ovations along with his wife Lani Hall. I hadn’t seen or even heard about the old Tijuana Brass lead for about a half century so didn’t know quite what to expect other than a Nostalgia show , but it was much more than that . It was a very eclectic concert full of multimedia and variois activities from taking audience questions to talking about his career -kind of a retrospective with a lot of multimedia ,as I said , pictures on screen, etc⁸ . Alfred was also promoting his latest album which features his wife Lonnie Hall and Sergio Mendes both of the Brazil 66 and this only a short time after the passing of Mendez, so perhaps a tribute of sorts with both windows and Halls pictures sublimated in the background on the album cover

Alperts latest, his 59th LP, features Lani Hall and Sergio Mendez

I came a little bit late but when I got there Alpert was still back in the beginning of his career about 1963 when he had become disenchanted with the music business not giving artists the respect they deserve so -he was just on the cusp of Fame – he opened a recording studio with his partner Jerry Moss called A&M records which I believe he is still running today at age ’64’, as he jokes. but we’ll talk about that that’swhat he kept referring to but he’s actually quite a few years older than that but very young for his age you -wouldn’t believe he’s pushing 90. So they open up A&M records and within a short time he had his first big hit the ‘lonely Bull’ and I think that I’m not sure if that was just her about it or the Tijuana Brass was I think maybe the TBR already began and that would have been there first hit . Although DJs we’re playing the backside , ‘Acapulco 1922′ which is also became a minor hit but the head was intended to be the lonely bull than it was and was a big top 10 hit I believe .  then Alpert would go  to record a lot of other people who would go on to fame at their label people like the Carpenters and Sergio Mendes and the Brazil 66 . Alpert did a performance of’ close to you’ written by I think Britt back rack and Hal David and he talked about Karen and her brother the Carpenters and they had some nice pictures with them all together up on the screen.  I think Bill Withers was another one of his label artists and Herb did a cover of ‘there ain’t no sunshine ‘ and that was beautiful . and of course his wife did  the main feature , a tribute to Sergio Mendes in the Brazil 66 , who recently passed . fitting maybe this is why they did the concert cuz almost the first half was Sergio Mendes songs Annie with mush Kanata which I guess was this big hit and Lonnie Hall was actually in the group the Brazil 66. I guess that’s how her Albert met her and eventually married her and they’ve been married together 50 years and she of course was half of the show tonight and so it all kind of came together and herb said that Sergio was very very good friends with him and he so sorry about the loss but they did five or six of his songs . n  got a great backup group with a fantastic piano player who really excelled on Fly Me to the Moon doing a lot of what do they call that lip sync not lip sync but you know sounds just catching I guess would be sketching and he had a fantastic bass player who had a really interesting base long neck and. Scat singing was the word I b was looking for and then the bass player did some great solos on his unusual base with a long neck and the drummer had his own unique sound with a lot of special effects in order to describe here but so that may have been the highlight of the night the just the or the longest song anyway Fly Me to the Moon. I don’t think he worked with Frank Sinatra or recorded Frank Sinatra because Frank Sinatra had his own label reprise. But it is talking her said that he really encourages people to come up with their own voice rather than to rather than try to copy other people and he said all the great artists like Louis Armstrong had their own sound and her had developed his own sound the Tijuana Brass was unique. So those are his words he was to live by he said you know come up with your own ideas and so anyway it was a great show and yes her about. I think either is 90 or he will be coming become 90 and so we have to add him to the very small list of people still performing in their late 80s or ’90s and that would include I think Doc’s service and finally did retire in his late 90s believe it or not but you’ve got Paul Anka at least in his mid 80s and you have Willie Nelson 91 and there’s Johnny Mathis I think 89 and Frankie Valli turned 90 this year and there’s probably some others herb Alfred I don’t think tours regularly but in any case he is touring and he says to give some energy somebody asked him why he’s still doing this in fact I guess his sister at his sister is 98 and she asked him why he’s still doing this and he said he loves it and he gives him energy and of course he gets to tour with his wife so it was really interesting show with the connections with the Lonnie Hall the street you Mendes and the fact that he just died in the Brazil 66 so they can do a little tribute to him and she can do her songs and they didn’t do any which would call it Tijuana Brass to my knowledge unless before I came unless they did some but they had enough other stuff to do and it was just such a well done show perfect sound and choreography and he couldn’t have been a better host what a tribute you know if you get a chance to see her about go see him he won’t be around you know 9 years old how many concerts tours is he going to do more maybe he’ll do 10:00 I hope he does but anyway that was my great night nice theaters down the street check out by I took one video
  1. nice bluesy take on the old clovers 50s hit
