Phil Everly of Top Music Duo
Passes, Leaves Five Decades of
Music, Memories
Another -big piece this time – of my heart gone with Phil Everly’s passing. We’re reminded with this how time moves very swiftly . Yet there were a lot of good times: seeing and hearing Phil in concert , the Boys in the spotlight now and again and on CD and DVD with new and old releases… the great Reunion concert, Wings of Nightingale under-appreciated comeback album and many others including solo projects and work with fellow artists that Phil (and Don) have given us. And, the strong Everly family will keep the musical candle burning no doubt as we’ve already seen with the September Everyly party. Ahhh. the music and memories live on – and so, thereby – does Phil. Listening to a steady stream of his music right now on Tunein and ‘Cliff Richard Radio. We’re also honoring you, Phil, as we can at our local site, http://OldieCountry.com and http://facebook.com/oldiescountry. We’ve seen an outpouring to our site from everyone from Brian Wilson to Duane Eddy, Linda Rondstadt to Carol King…and the many fans, young and older… There’s definitely sweetness in it all along with the bitter. But still and all, as Everly friend and fan, himself, Neil Diamond once wrote in a song, for Phil’s life it’s ‘Done Too Soon.’ We will continue to play Everlys = the greatest duo of all- music as long as we breathe, that’s for sure. It’s not goodbye Phil, just so long for now…Thanks for the music and memories you’ve left us. As one short but ‘right on’ news clip about Phil, noted: Phil (with Don) ‘helped draw the blueprint of rock’n’ roll in the 1950s and 1960s with a high harmony that captured the yearning and angst of a nation of teenage baby boomers looking for a way to express themselves beyond the simple platitudes of the pop music of the day….that touched the hearts and spared the imagination of rock and roll singers for decades , including the Beatles – who even at one time refered to themselves as ‘the English Everly Brothers…universally identifiable (music) featuring their twined voices with lyrics that mirrored the fatalism of country music and a rocking backbeat. Their career spanned five decades.’
The Everly’s were unique – not pure rock and roll and not pure country. They were their own sound.Much like Linda Ronstadt notes, below, the Everly Brother’s ‘blood sound’ was something that you don’t get from non-related duos – and they werre one of the few going – and did it well -very well. We knew the boys were getting on, like everyone, but we were impressed to see Phil come out recently to play on others’ albums and make some public appearances. Had no idea he was this sick. Perhaps he was well aware and just trying to make go out with a little glory. Don’t believe there’d been much recording or touring of late. We’ll learn more. The Everly Brothers were often omitted when one talks about rock and roll pioneers but they were really right there at the beginning , or close – 1957 just a year or two after the inception of rock and roll with Bye, Bye Love, Then I Kissed Ya, Ebony Eyes, Wake Up Little Suzie just to name a few and then a host of ‘forgotten’ tunes like Temptation, which we’ll play for you here and now. We haven’t talked much of the Everlys of late…no reason not too.. they’re as good as it gets when it comes to sweet ballad rock and roll. Here’s to you Phil…We won’t foget you in Oldies country as we’ll play our hearts out the next days and weeks – and on and on…
